How it started…

Max’s journey into the world of cars began at a young age, acquiring his first vehicle at just 14, a ‘65 Mustang which he tinkered with tirelessly despite its rustic appearance and lack of proper paint or license. His fascination with automobiles and machinery extended to Coca-Cola and arcade machines, where he honed his skills refurbishing them for carnival games and even Disneyland attractions.

Under the mentorship of Buddy, who owned a mechanic shop in Santa Ana, Max learned the ropes of the trade while simultaneously balancing work alongside his wife's teaching job. Joining Malcom’s team in his early twenties marked the beginning of a decade-long tenure where he climbed the ranks from a lot attendant to overseeing the entire shop, imbibing invaluable lessons on customer relations and business management through seven-day work weeks.

A pivotal moment came with the impending arrival of his second child, prompting a shift towards brokering cars under Ken Fox’s guidance for a couple of years before seizing the opportunity to acquire South County Auto Body. Over two decades, Max nurtured the business, later expanding with Fox Auto Care and Phillips Auto, ultimately fulfilling his dream of crafting high-end cars with ventures like Chris Ashton’s Ruffian Cars. His journey culminated in the purchase of a building in a bustling shopping district, solidifying his dedication to craftsmanship and automotive excellence.
